A fire destroyed a garage on Third Avenue and also destroyed the garage behind it on Second Avenue in the Village of Pelham on Friday (Oct. 30) evening.
Pelham firefighters reached the scene at 6:26pm and found the fire on Third Avenue was “fully involved.” Pelham Manor, New Rochelle and Eastchester fire departments joined the response and the last units left the scene at about 9:45pm.
Three career firefighters in the Pelham department were taken to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, treated and released. Mike Leak had a shoulder injury, Vincent D’Onofrio had back pain and Robert DeStasio had a pinched nerve. Interim Fire Chief Julian Keiser said all are expected back on duty in a matter of days.
Chief Keiser said the fire was not suspicious and the exact cause has not been determined.
Lt. Julian Keiser was appointed interim chief of the Pelham Village Fire Department on Oct. 30, succeeding Chief Curtis Taylor who had resigned. Village Trustee Greg Breskin said candidates for the position have been interviewed but no recommendation has yet been made to the Village Board. Interim Chief Keiser has served as a firefighter in Pelham for 28 years, is the senior lieutenant and is fire inspector. He has also served as acting chief in the past.
